25 area high school students have been chosen to learn from top New York City photographers. The teachers for the Henry Wolf Summer Photography workshop will be David Black, Geoff Green, Carlo Van de Roer, and Faith-Ann Young. By the end of the program each student will have created a portfolio of photography pieces which will be displayed in the ADC gallery.

All are invited to view the work of these extraordinary high school students on Saturday, July 19th.

Ed Fella and Post Typography in the ADC Gallery

The OppositesAttract series, moderated and led by Armin Vit and Bryony Gomez-Palacio, brings two opposites - Ed Fella and Post Typography - to the ADC Gallery. This format has proven to be a vibrant and interesting way to see the work of and learn the backstory of creatives with divergently different perspectives.

Post Typography was originally conceived and founded in 2001 as an avant garde anti-design movement by Nolen Strals and Bruce Willen. Their work has received numerous design awards and been featured in Ellen Lupton's Thinking With Type and D.I.Y.: Design It Yourself, The Art of Modern Rock, Metropolis magazine, Taschen's Contemporary Graphic Design, and Phaidon's Area 2. Post Typography have appeared in numerous design and art exhibitions, and their posters are collected by high school punk rockers and prominent designers. Strals and Willen currently teach classes in design and typography at the Maryland Institute College of Art, and have lectured at the Cooper Union, Minneapolis College of Art &Design, and Harvard University.

Ed Fella is an artist and graphic designer whose work has had an important influence on contemporary typography here and in Europe. He practiced professionally as a commercial artist for 30 years in Detroit before receiving an MFA in Design from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1987. In 1997 he received the Chrysler Award and in 1999 an honorary doctorate from CCS in Detroit. His work is in the National Design Museum and the MoMA in New York. He was a finalist for the National Design Award in 2001.

ADC Young Guns Live | Julia Hoffmann: In Transit

Julia Hoffmann treks back to the ADC to talk about transitions from design to advertising, from traditional to interactive, from Pentagram to Crispin Porter Bogusky, and from New York City to Boulder, Colorado. She'll share her work, which - like her career, life, and location - is constantly in flux.

The Undiscovered Letter Online Exhibition

Launched by the Art Directors Club and Moleskine®, The Undiscovered Letter was a creative competition developed to raise awareness about lettera27. The challenge was open exclusively to past ADC Young Guns, who were asked to conjure up the 27th letter of the alphabet. Participants were encouraged to do away with boundaries and interpret this concept freely.

Every participant was given a custom Moleskine® notebook to sketch in. After developing their ideas, they were asked to submit one final project.

Based on jury scores, 27 finalists were selected. Among these, three projects were singled out as Judge's Favorites, and a fourth - the top-ranked project - was named the 27th letter.

ADC Young Guns 6 Call for Entries Opens!

Fifty new Young Guns will be chosen as this year’s competition class; they will be announced in September and presented with the ADC Cube at the opening party for the gallery exhibition of their work. Selections of their work will be printed in a commemorative, limited edition volume published exclusively for the Art Directors Club by Moleskine®. The ADC Young Guns 6 class will also have their work added to the ADC’s permanent collection online and receive one-year membership in the organization.

Submissions need not conform to any specific media categories; entries may consist of one medium or as many as the contestant chooses to include. Contestants are asked to submit 6–10 pieces, up to 3 of which can be personal work, and will be judged on the basis of this body of work. Eligibility requires only that the contestant is 30 years of age or under and has at least two years of professional experience (both full-time and freelance work qualify). The competition is open internationally. The entry fee is $125 USD; proceeds help fund the ADC’s wide-ranging programs throughout the year. The deadline for submissions is June 2, and late entries will be assessed an additional $25 fee.
